Etre Et Avoir - a Documentary Essay - 2595 Words | …
In order to further illustrate the mutually harmful effects on humans and orcas, due to captivity, Blackfish continuously integrates visual footage. Throughout many scenes of the documentary, whale-on-whale aggression is depicted in order to portray the hostile relationships within the tanks. In one scene, there is a close up shot of the side of a whale’s body. It is extremely raked up and visibly bleeding out into the water. This imagery of blood and suffering of the animal makes the audience concerned for the orca. This relates to animal welfare since humans do consider themselves superior to animals, yet their suffering is a genuine concern of ours. Another visual that grabs the viewers by the stomach is when an instructor, Tamarie, is shown interacting with the orcas. In this segment, you see Tamarie placing her foot down on an orca and quickly lifting it repeatedly. Moments after, Tamarie is taken by her foot and dragged down into the tank with the two killer whales. Your heart stops as you see her being attacked by the whale and not knowing if she is going to make it out alive. Suddenly the dominant whale, Kasatka, was let into the tank and the whale that was holding onto Tamarie, let her go. Once she was let go, you can see her arm bent in a U-shape with blood seeping out. I cannot even imagine the intensity of the pain she was in. By seeing this horrifying situation you cannot help but feel fearful for Tamarie’s life. When you are left in the position to guess whether she is going to make it out or not, you begin to feel sick to your stomach. This tactic is also used later in the film, with a male trainer, in order to invoke the same gut-wrenching response. As a result of incorporating graphic text, the audience is able to visualize the harmful consequences of holding orcas captive.
