In 1995 a group of Battle Creek citizens organized the Sojourner Truth 200th Anniversary Committee to prepare for the bicentennial of Truth's birth in 1997. After a year-long series of artistic and educational programs and special events, the Committee saw that there was a continuing need to explore and celebrate Sojourner Truth's life beyond the anniversary year.
